Discover Château Mas Neuf

Meeting Luc Baudet (an atypical winegrower)

Where does this calling come from ?

I have had a passion for food and wine for a very long time. As far back as I can remember, the quality and variety of meals was a worry for my mother... a big worry, and this resulted in numerous animated debates and tastings.

After passing the "Bac" - baccalaureate - I took a course in agronomy with a specialisation in Food Science.
At the same time, I had the opportunity of collaborating on several projects relating to the taste of AOC (appellation of origin) cheeses and was also involved with the audit of the Concours Général Agricole, where the best wines and cheeses of France are tasted.

Armed with a brand new diploma, I left for an 18-month stay in Ireland. This allowed me to discover some of the secrets of the aromas coming from the whiskys in oak barrels and to perfect my palate for blends and tasting.

Then, 8 years of collaboration with multinational companies allowed me to understand the links between the quality, the symbolic value of a foodstuff and consumer perception. Then I wanted to distancemyself from constraints which became less and less compatible with my human and personal aspirations.

Together with some others passionate about good wines, we travelled over 20 000 km through all the southern vineyards to find a wine estate that would fit in with our aspirations. Mas Neuf was a great opportunity after some tough setbacks.

After 3 vintages and an additional training course in viticulture and oenology at the Montpellier Agricultural College, I am now involved with the destiny of this estate.

Why here ?

Our terroirs indicate that they have the potential to show themselves amongst the best vintages in the south. The Costières, especially in the southern part, have Villafranchian terroir and marine influence: a kind of marriage between Châteauneuf and Médoc… efforts made in mastering the vine and in making wine can lead to good surprises.

What makes you go ahead ?

- Wine is an ongoing beginning, a limitless area of investigation, a journey where the link to nature is direct, even brutal in its extremes, but exhilerating. In an environment which is increasingly focussed on speed, activity remains dependent on seasonal rhythms with which one must be at one - for our greatest pleasure.

- Meeting with people - the exchanges, the sharing of simple and fair values with a family, interlocuters and other winegrowers.

- The satisfaction of knowing that the care, the work and the passion which one puts into one's everyday work, will be found in the bottle and then to see the pleasure in the eyes of the person discovering the wine.
